How to Fold a Wonton – Happy Lunar New Year!

Today is the first day of Lunar New Year (LNY). LNY is observed in much of Eastern Asia. My relatives in Taiwan get nine(!) days off, and festivities can last over three weeks. Like Thanksgiving in the U.S., families travel home and spend the holiday together. Of course, food is a big part of the tradition. Dumpling folding parties are common. Shockingly, I’ve never made dumplings myself, though I grew up eating them almost weekly. My awesome fiancé decided to change that though and taught me how to make wontons today!

For wontons, start with square wrappers. Wonton wrappers are typically thinner than other dumpling wrappers. When assembling at home, the filling is usually homemade, but the wrapper is often store-bought. Have a small bowl of water ready for dipping your fingers, as well as a sheet pan for placing folded wontons.

In six simple steps, you will have a cute little wonton, ready to be cooked.

1. Start with a small scoop of filling. Do not overfill, or the dumpling will leak when cooked.

2. Dip your finger in the water and run it along two adjacent edges. Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Carefully press the edges tightly together, pushing out any air bubbles.

3. Moisten one lower corner of the triangle and bend the two bottom corners together.

4. Overlap one corner over the other and press firmly to seal.

6. Tuck the ends under and you have a wonton!
